Career Assistance Offered in Loudoun During Workforce Development Month
September is Workforce Development Month, and the Loudoun Workforce Resource Center will feature special events and workshops at no cost for job seekers and employers.
The center will host two “Coffee with a Career Counselor” days, where job seekers can talk with a career counselor and get job search advice with their morning cup of coffee. The event will be held Sept. 10 at Ridgetop Coffee & Tea, 21631 Ridgetop Circle in Sterling; and Sept. 11 at Blend Coffee Bar, 43170 Southern Walk Plaza #120 in Broadlands. Both events run from 9 a.m. to noon.
The center will host an open house to learn about the tools, resources and support available through the center on Sept. 19, for employers from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and job seekers from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Employers register at bit.ly/2K4DZx2; job seekers register at bit.ly/2K2nKAE.
Job seekers can attend “Breakfast with Businesses,” a networking event with businesses from various industries, at the Loudoun Workforce Resource Center on Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Light morning refreshments served. Registration is required at bit.ly/2Mgcgw1.
There will also be a number of job seeker workshops throughout the month. Registration is required at loudoun.gov/wrcworkshops. They include:
- “Trip Planning and Commuter Incentives,” for people who want to expand their job search but are unsure about commuting options, Sept. 4, 10– 11 a.m.
- A “Lynda.com Learning Demo,” introducing an online learning platform that offers video courses in business, software, and creative skills, Sept. 17 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.
- “Surviving and Thriving Job Loss,” helping attendees uncover their strengths and abilities as they pursue new job opportunities, Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to noon.
- “Ready for Work”, a two-day event teaching key skills for successful teamwork, communication, and effective problem solving, Sept. 26 and 27 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- “U.S. Census Jobs in Loudoun County,” a series of events where attendees can learn more about the flexible and part-time positions available with the U.S. Census. Sessions begin on Sept. 6, 2019, at 9:30 a.m.
The center also offers workshops for employers, held at Paul Davis Restoration, 44601 Guilford Drive, Ashburn:
- “Immigrant Workforce & Hiring Documentation,” presented by Catholic Charities, provides insight on employing foreign-born workers, including a review of various asylum/refugee hiring documents, Sept. 17, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m; registration at bit.ly/2Gxa6EA.
- “Will Yours Make the Grade?,” a session on employee handbooks presented by Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian, where attorneys will discuss best practices for organizational Human Resource handbooks, Sept. 17, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; registration at bit.ly/2Olnxy1.
Representatives from the Workforce Resource Center will also on hand at other events in September, including Job Prep Express Sept. 7, 8:30 a.m. to noon at Northern Virginia Community College, 21200 Campus Drive, Sterling; the Career and Trades Fair, Sept. 14, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Rust Library, 380 Old Waterford Road NW, Leesburg; and Hire Loudoun, with free resume reviews, Sept 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Northern Virginia Community College.
